Tammy B. Laura T. and Laura C. of Maypop
Have you heard of Maypop Coffee and Garden Shop? If so, lucky you! If not, let us tell you about this Webster Groves Gem. Maypop uses a cute brick house as their coffee shop and behind that, a large beautiful greenhouse for their garden center. The two are connected by a dreamy array of outdoor plants for sale. You can sip your coffee in the house, or take it around the garden center to explore their plants and engage with the extremely friendly and knowledgable staff. My favorite thing about Maypop is they have a great selection of native plants so I can both beautify my yard and support the ecosystem. Maypop is owned by Tammy Behm, managed by Laura Tetley and the director of marketing and the voice of the shop and this interview is Laura Caldie.. The concept was born when these three met working at a bigger garden center. Laura C. put’s it best here…
“Maypop is a gathering point for all who wish to cultivate a simple and abundant lifestyle. Our modern garden store offers a thoughtfully curated selection of purposeful plants and natural landscape solutions, without any invasive species or harsh chemicals. Our coffee shop brews hand-crafted drinks with a focus on flavor, quality, and guest experience. Custom tastings & workshops blend both worlds, by letting you engage with local experts in food, art, gardening and more in an intimate setting.”
What drew you to entrepreneurship, specifically this line of work?
For me, it was ultimately a desire to have more control over the atmosphere where I spend so much of my time. Work is a huge chunk of our waking lives these days, and not being excited about how I’m spending that time can have real tolls on my mental health. If I’m going to have a 9-5 career, I need to be surrounded by beauty, nature, good people and amazing food and drinks. I think it was an attempt to try a new challenge, but also to try and align my morals with my lifestyle on a higher level.
Have you overcome any business flops? What was your struggle and how did you conquer it?
The inherent seasonality of our industry was the primary challenge. From the get go it was a race to find the property, buy it, renovate it, and set everything up in time for Spring. Typically strong Spring sales will carry a garden shop through the slower months, but since we were a little late to the game, we’ve had to rely more on other parts of our business. None of us knew what to expect, but I think we’ve all been pleasantly surprised by how well the coffee shop balances ot that seasonality. Some days we sell more coffee than annual flowers!
What about your business are you most proud of?
I really love the way our store name developed. It’s memorable and fun to say for people of all ages, and it actually has a lot of meaning too. Whether or not you know the whole story, it sticks with you. I didn’t go to school for horticulture or marketing, so being able to craft something that blends the two really well makes me feel accomplished.
More about the name…Our namesake, the Maypop, is a showy native vine whose stunning Summer blooms give way to an edible fruit. Flowers can be harvest and used as a sleep aid, or left standing to supply nectar for local insects, bats and hummingbirds. Also known as the Passionflower, this multi-functioned plant truly exemplifies the spirit of our garden center.
Speaking of fun events at Maypop… This Friday they’re hosting a special Galentine’s Day Event. Read more from the hosts.
